1901 Census

The 1901 census contains more columns than previous censuses, so to keep all the most important information on one sheet, here is a description of the columns, some of which seem to be redundant.

  • Column 1: Number of schedule. Supposedly, this means the family entered on the census and not the number of the house.
  • Column 1 a): Road, street, etc. and no. or name of the house. In every case, this is “Elsfield”, followed by a number. “Elsfield” is omitted here. HN – House no.
  • Column 2: Houses
  • Column 3: Number of rooms occupied, if fewer than five.
  • Column 4: Name of person
  • Column 5: Relation to the head of family.
  • Column 6: Condition as to marriage.
  • Column 7: Age last birthday.
  • Column 8: Profession or occupation
  • Column 9: Employer, worker or on own account.
  • Column 10: If working at home.
  • Column 11: Where born.
  • Column 12: Whether deaf and dumb, blind, lunatic, imbecile or feeble-minded.
