angie smith (Oxford) asked

Hello I am the Great Grand child of Harriett Ann/Annie Gammon who resided with her Grandfather Moses Gammon in Elsfield with William and Harriett Elston Nee Gammon. I wonder if anybody had any information on any of these people particularly my G.Grandmother who I am trying to trace the death place of. It is believed she emigrated to Australia without her children. Also where did they live in Elsfield and is it still there?

Thank you
Angie

Mavis Curtis (Elsfield) answered
Hello Angie. I've got the census returns for Elsfield in the 19th century and there are two references to Harriet Ann in 1871 when she is listed as the granddaughter of Ann Gammon, She was 10 and had been born in Headington. The second reference is in 1881 when she is listed as a domestic servant living with her grandma Ann, died 1896,unmarried uncle Moses aged 65, William Elston and his wife Harriet nee Gammon. William and Harriet also have a daughter Ethel aged 8 at that time. In previous censuses Moses was listed as a sawyer but here he is described as a general labourer. Harriet Elston is a dressmaker. There is a photograph of William Elston in the gallery. There will shortly be one of Harriet Gammon and Ethel Allam nee Elston as a middle aged lady. Ethel helped John Buchan's wife sew the Elsfield WI banner. The family house has now fallen down. It was behind Tree Cottage opposite the Manor. The carpenter's shop is still there next to Tree Cottage and now part of that property.
