The History of Elsfield
The history of Elsfield has been the subject of extensive research in recent years and has been the subject of three exhibitions. Dr Mavis Curtis, a village resident, has collected a wide range of materials from the Oxfordshire Records Office, the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies, the East Kent Archive and the Manuscripst section of the National Library of Scotland. She has also recorded the recollections of current and past residents dating from the 1920s to the present day. A small amount of this information is shown here. A detailed and more comprehensive local history will shortly be collated and published, we hope, in book form. Details of how to obtain this publication will be given when they are available.
For anyone with an interest in the village’s 20th century history, Carrier’s Cart to Oxford: Growing up in the 1920s in the Oxfordshire Village of Elsfield by Mildred Masheder (Wychwood Press, 2008) will be of interest. John Buchan’s Memory hold the door and William Buchan’s John Buchan, a memoir also have interesting insights into Elsfield life.
